Mexico’s abundant sunshine means it can become a global solar superpower, say energy experts

Huge solar potential

Mexico’s enormous solar potential offers an even more transformative energy future. 

Mexico ranks among the top 20 countries globally for solar potential. In a comparison of 12 cities worldwide, Ember found Mexico City to be the third-best location for 24-hour solar performance. 

Under an ambitious ‘solar superpower’ scenario modelled in the report, Mexico could eliminate all US gas imports for power generation by 2030, with solar providing 58% of total electricity.

The technical limit is even higher. Hourly simulations using 18 years of solar radiation data matched to electricity demand data from 2023 shows that solar combined with batteries can meet 90% of Mexico’s electricity demand with only 6% excess supply.

Cost barriers holding Mexico back

Despite its huge solar advantage, the report highlights that solar projects in Mexico cost 38% more than the global average and battery projects double. This makes deploying the solar and batteries needed to reach 45% clean power by 2030 an estimated 50% more expensive than the global average. 

The authors call for reforms to close the cost gap, including competitive procurement, streamlined permitting, transmission expansion, lower-cost financing, and stronger domestic supply chains.

“With the right investment and policy support, Mexico can close the gap with global installation costs to unlock its full solar potential and strengthen its energy independence,” continued Mr Suarez.

Ember’s report powerfully shows that Mexico can be a true solar superpower. By harnessing our abundant sunshine and reducing reliance on imported gas, it offers a vision of a cleaner, more resilient, and hopeful energy future.

The report is technically sound and demonstrates Mexico’s enormous solar potential, but technological advancement must also be accompanied by political will, citizen awareness and acceptance, well-evaluated and addressed social and environmental impacts, regulatory optimization, access to competitive financing, and the promotion of competitive economic processes that drive the energy transition. In other words, a comprehensive vision is required that combines technology, public policy, energy justice, and good governance.
