43% of Türkiye’s electricity was generated from low-carbon sources in 2025, matching the global average.

Despite drought conditions and a decline in hydropower output in 2025, hydropower remains Türkiye’s largest source of clean electricity (16%). The country’s share of wind and solar (22%) is above the global average (17%).

Türkiye’s largest power source is coal with 34% share in generation. It is the largest coal power generator in Europe, although coal power is close to peaking. Almost two-thirds of Türkiye’s coal generation relies on imports, with implications for energy security.

The country’s power sector emissions almost doubled over the last two decades due to an increase in fossil fuel generation to meet rising demand, although the growth of wind and solar over the last decade has helped curb that trend. Türkiye’s emissions per capita were level with the global average in 2025.

The country’s wind share in generation (11.1%) is still ahead of G7 countries such as Italy (8.1%) and France (8.2%). Solar power generation doubled in the last two years. However, solar’s share of generation (10.5%) is still far behind southern European countries with similar solar potential, such as Italy (17%) or Spain (22%).

As of March 2026, Türkiye was aiming for 47% of its electricity to come from renewables by 2030. For the country’s latest renewables targets, see our 2030 Global Renewable Target Tracker.

Our work

Strengthening evidence for a faster energy transition and highlighting the benefits of scaling up renewables

Our work in Türkiye aims to make energy data accessible and understandable for policymakers, journalists, researchers and the wider public. We provide independent, data-driven analysis and policy insights, focusing primarily on the power sector, as electricity is the fastest route to decarbonizing energy systems.

Through evidence-based analysis, we support informed policy discussions on expanding clean electricity and reducing Türkiye’s reliance on imported fossil fuels to build a more secure and affordable electricity system. To achieve this, we use transparent data and analysis to highlight current trends and potential pathways for the energy transition.

Commentary on Türkiye’s energy transition

Turkey to race ahead of EU on battery storage amid fossil fuel crisis

Coal prices surge as Middle East tensions disrupt energy markets

Although electric cars have started to become widespread in Türkiye, there is still a large, untapped potential to reduce energy imports

Hybrid plants ‘fastest way’ to unlock 8 GW of solar capacity in Türkiye

Although down on the record amount of solar deployed in 2024, 2025’s figures represent continued momentum for Türkiye’s solar market

Domestic gas was able to meet only 5% of consumption in 2025, a new gas power plant will lead to a further increase in gas imports

With COP31, Türkiye has a chance to take on a leadership role in the region’s energy transition and position itself as a clean energy hub

Solar and wind are becoming an increasingly crucial part of Türkiye’s energy security. If they can be rapidly scaled up in line with targets, they’ll offer a valuable complement to hydro in drought years and displace costly fossil fuel imports.
