Chile could save $15 million for every percentage point it reduces its renewable energy curtailment

Opportunities to reduce curtailments

The report identifies a package of measures, mainly focused on providing flexibility to the electricity system, to transform curtailments from a problem into an opportunity within five years:

  • Storage: enable a multi-service revenue scheme for batteries, remunerating energy arbitrage, frequency regulation, operational reserve, ancillary services and capacity markets.
  • Smart transmission: the implementation of dynamic line rating (DLR) systems would increase the effective capacity of the grid by 10-30% in less than three years.
  • Demand response markets: design incentives for industrial and residential consumers to adjust their consumption during hours of high renewable generation, absorbing surpluses and reducing congestion on the grids.

“Large transmission projects that will alleviate congestion, such as the Kimal-Lo Aguirre line, will not come online until 2029. Chile cannot wait four years to act. Reducing curtailments now is key to improving the reliability and sustainability of the electricity system,” added Suárez.

Global leadership at stake

Compared to international standards, Chile still has room for improvement: Spain and Germany, with similar or even higher levels of renewable energy participation, maintain curtailment below 5% thanks to robust grids, storage and more flexible electricity markets.

Chile is already a leader in renewable energy. The next step is to ensure that this energy is not wasted, but reaches homes and businesses, strengthening the country’s energy independence and consolidating its regional leadership.
