Rooftop solar capacity has likely almost doubled in the last 12 months and could deliver another “Meralco Terra Solar”-sized project within 24 months, easing the country’s energy emergency
Manila, 28 May – The payback period for residential rooftop solar in the Philippines has fallen from 4 years in May 2025 to just 3.1 years in May 2026, as retail electricity prices have surged and panel costs have declined, according to a new analysis by energy think tank Ember. Commercial rooftop payback times have dropped from 3 years to 2.3 years, and industrial from 3.9 years to 3.1 years over the same period. These levels, the report says, should now encourage mass uptake.
The analysis found that Meralco’s retail electricity prices in May 2026 were 17% higher for residential customers, 18% higher for commercial customers and 14% higher for industrial customers compared with a year earlier. The Philippines now has the costliest residential electricity price in Southeast Asia, the second-highest commercial price and the third-highest industrial price. A roughly 10% fall in solar installation costs over the same 12 months has further compressed payback timelines. These price rises are prior to the global energy crisis, which is likely to push up retail prices further later this year.
