London, 14 October 2026 – Electric car fleets have saved oil-importing countries $20 billion in crude oil costs in the six months since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran, according to new analysis from global energy think tank Ember. At the same time, fifteen countries, including India and Brazil, have overtaken the US for fully electric car sales share in 2026, as sales accelerate across markets around the world. The findings come as disruptions to global oil supplies push up fuel prices and accelerate the shift to electric vehicles (EV) across the world.
The analysis is published alongside the launch of Ember’s EV sales tracker. It covers 56 countries that together account for over 90% of electric car sales and over 80% of all car sales globally, and estimates the oil displacement from each country’s fleet.
The analysis shows that electric vehicle fleets are already reducing countries’ exposure to disruption in global oil markets. Between March and August 2026, electric cars in oil-importing countries displaced an estimated 200 million barrels of crude oil, worth $20 billion.
