France generated 92% of its electricity from clean sources, above the global average of 39%.

France relied on fossil fuels for just 8% of its electricity in 2023. Its emissions per capita were below the global average.

France’s largest source of low-carbon electricity is nuclear (65%). Its share of wind and solar (14%) is above the global average (13%) but significantly lower than that of its neighbour and fellow G7 member Germany (39%), as well as below the European Union average (27%).

France’s power sector emissions fell in the last two decades, as growth in wind and solar partially replaced fossil fuels and the country saw a small decline in total generation.

France aims for 34% renewable electricity by 2030, while the IEA’s Net Zero Emissions scenario sets out a global target of 60% renewable electricity by 2030.
