Italy
Italy generates almost half of its electricity with renewables, but remains heavily reliant on costly gas power
Anchor point: Overview
49% of Italy’s electricity was generated from low-carbon sources in 2025, below the EU average of 71%.
Italy’s largest source of clean electricity is solar (17%). Its share of wind and solar (25%) is below the EU average (30%).
Italy relied on fossil fuels for 51% of its electricity in 2025. Its emissions per capita of 1.3 tonnes of CO2e were in line with the EU average of 1.3 tonnes of CO2e. It ranked 17th for electricity demand globally in 2024.
Italy’s power sector emissions have almost halved over the last two decades, mainly due to solar and wind expansion replacing fossil fuels and a decline in electricity demand.
As of 1 January 2026, Italy was aiming for 69% of renewable electricity generation by 2030. For the country’s latest renewables targets, see our 2030 Global Renewable Target Tracker.
