Summary
Ember’s US electricity dataset provides electricity generation (TWh), emissions from electricity generation (MtCO2e) and carbon intensity of electricity generation (gCO2e per KWh) for all 50 states.
Data download format update (July 2026)
Unit changes. Generation values are now displayed in TWh, instead of GWh. Emissions are displaced in MtCO2e instead of ktCO2e.
One row per state, month and electricity source. The “Electricity source” column covers fuels and aggregates; The column “Is aggregated source” flags aggregates (Clean, Fossil, Renewables, Total generation).
Metrics are columns, not rows. Generation (TWh), Share of generation (%), Emissions (MtCO2e), Share of emissions (%) and Emissions intensity (gCO2e/kWh), as well as year-on-year changes. Emissions intensity is now available per source, not just overall. Total emissions and overall intensity are on the “Total generation” row.
