Summary
Coal mine methane (CMM) accounts for a third of methane emissions from the fossil fuel sector, on par with methane emissions from the oil or gas industries. Timely and transparent data on emission is essential for planning, implementation and tracking progress on mitigation efforts. This dataset provides a comprehensive, up-to-date view of methane emissions from coal mining at the country level, offering early insight into where emissions are rising, stabilising or declining. All results are presented in a consistent format to enable clear comparisons across countries.
This dataset also includes the share of hard coal production with methane currently detectable via satellites, as well as the potential for satellite detection based on geographic and atmospheric conditions. Each country’s data is accompanied by an Ember confidence score that reflects Ember’s level of confidence in the country’s reported emissions. This takes into account the recency of reporting to the UNFCCC (CRITERIA1), similarity to other independent estimates (CRITERIA2) and tier of reporting (CRITERIA3), allowing users to assess the robustness of the estimates.
