In May 2026, China shipped a record value of electric vehicles abroad, exceeding the previous monthly high set in April and underscoring the country’s dominance in global EV manufacturing. China exported around 448,000 electric passenger cars in May, roughly 279,000 battery-electric vehicles and 169,000 plug-in hybrids. EV exports have closed in on lithium-ion batteries as the largest of the “new three” cleantech export categories, having grown from under $1 billion a month in 2020.
Exports to Southeast Asia reached an all-time high of $1.2 billion in May 2026, as ASEAN nations accelerated the electrification of their vehicle fleets. The surge was led by Thailand, which took a record of more than 36,000 Chinese electric cars in May, and the Philippines, where shipments climbed above 33,000 vehicles.
