Brussels, 19 August – New analysis from energy think-tank Ember finds that Central Europe could produce 191 TWh of clean power from solar panels mounted above or between food crops (known as agri-PV). This is equivalent to 68% of today’s electricity demand in Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia and almost three times the countries’ combined current renewable electricity generation (73 TWh).
Deploying just 9% of the calculated agri-PV potential could cover the electricity needs of agriculture and food processing in Central Europe.
According to the report findings, 180 GW of solar panels could be installed on crops across the Central European countries. This is triple the solar capacity declared in draft climate targets for 2030 (60 GW) and seven times more than the total installed capacity by the end of 2023 (25 GW).
